Why?

Under the terms of the settlement reached between the victim's families and Virginia Tech, the University must "create or maintain one or more electronic archive(s) within six (6) months..." of the settlement date (June 16 2008). It requires that the families "be provided with remote computer access to such archive(s)". As of December 17, 2008 according to the Associated Press, families have been granted remote access to the archive, but Virginia Tech intends to permit public access only from Newman Library in Blacksburg, VA and the Library of Virginia in Richmond, VA sometime after February 1, 2008 until their software can "handle a large volume of traffic". These documents should be freely accessible to the public as soon as is possible. In order to expedite the process, we decided to help out.

How?

The Prevail Archive is made possible because nine student volunteers took time from classes to scan over six thousand pages during the two day timespan granted to us by University Relations. During this time, more than 15,000 pages were sorted. By the end of the effort, after eliminating duplicate documents, the archive was reduced to just over 6,000 pages.
